Crude oil exposures reveal roles for intracellular calcium cycling in haddock craniofacial and cardiac development.
2016
AbstractRecent studies have shown that crude oil exposure affects cardiac development in fish by disrupting excitation-contraction (EC) coupling. We previously found that eggs of Atlantic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) bind dispersed oil droplets, potentially leading to more profound toxic effects from uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Using lower concentrations of dispersed crude oil (0.7–7 μg/L ∑PAH), here we exposed a broader range of developmental stages over both short and prolonged durations. We quantified effects on cardiac function and morphogenesis, characterized novel craniofacial defects, and examined the expression of genes encoding potential targets underly…
Integrability of orthogonal projections, and applications to Furstenberg sets
2022
Let $\mathcal{G}(d,n)$ be the Grassmannian manifold of $n$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, and let $\pi_{V} \colon \mathbb{R}^{d} \to V$ be the orthogonal projection. We prove that if $\mu$ is a compactly supported Radon measure on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ satisfying the $s$-dimensional Frostman condition $\mu(B(x,r)) \leq Cr^{s}$ for all $x \in \mathbb{R}^{d}$ and $r > 0$, then $$\int_{\mathcal{G}(d,n)} \|\pi_{V}\mu\|_{L^{p}(V)}^{p} \, d\gamma_{d,n}(V) \tfrac{1}{2}$ and $t \geq 1 + \epsilon$ for a small absolute constant $\epsilon > 0$. We also prove a higher dimensional analogue of this estimate for codimension-1 Furstenberg sets in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. As another corollary of our method,…
2018
The situation of the surrogate pregnancy in Spain demands action by our legislators and / or our public authorities. The reason is that the current legal system in which there is a ban of the surrogacy contract is not being attended. In this issue an analysis of the situation in Spain and in other countries is made, to conclude from the right to the dignity of women, that possible actions could be taken to adapt the reality to the legal system.
Un cuento de robots : La hija cibernética de descartes
2021
French philosopher René Descartes is today valued as a forerunner of the studies of human mind, artificial intelligence and robotic systems. Throughout his work there are large references to automata and the possibility of artificial life, as well as an assessment of the differences between rational behavior of human beings and the purely mechanical of animals and automata. In addition to these references, there is a fable about the creation by the philosopher of an automaton that replicated his deceased daughter Francine, a story that is well known among the French and Anglo-Saxon specialists, but not so much in the Spanish ones, which is what settles this short work
